Business owners need to make choices on their 2021 taxes regarding the Paycheck Protection Program and the Employee Retention Credit. Both were enacted to help businesses stay in operation during the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting on Feb. 24, 2021, the SBA is establishing 14-day, exclusive PPP loan application period for businesses and nonprofits with fewer than 20 employees. This is according to guidance on the SBA and White House sites. According to the statement, this will give lenders and community partners more time to work with the smallest businesses to submit their applications.
According to a recent release from the Small Business Administration, borrowers can apply for forgiveness of their PPP loan using new SBA Form 3508S if the total PPP loan amount they received from their lender was $50,000 or less. "SBA Form 3508S requires fewer calculations and less documentation for eligible borrowers. Borrowers that use SBA Form 3508S are exempt from reductions in loan forgiveness amounts based on reductions in full-time equivalent (FTE) employees or in salaries or wages," says the form instruction.
